Menopause

Menopause is a natural transition in a women’s life that signals the end of reproduction and the beginning of a new phase.  While some women experience a relatively smooth transition into menopause, for some, the road may be bumpy.

The fluctuating hormone levels can lead to one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Changes with menstrual cycles
  • Hot flashes
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Weight changes
  • Emotional changes
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Low libido
  • Headache
  • Joint/muscle pain
  • Bladder incontinence

From a Chinese medicine perspective, many of the imbalances that occur during menopause such as hot flashes, insomnia and anxiety are derived from the rising of yang (or heat) energy.  While the heat of this energy can be uncomfortable, the release of energy from this process can be used for the better to harness change in your life.

There is no better time to take inventory of your health and lifestyle, and empower yourself in working towards optimal health and wellness.

How We Can Help…

Treatment

There is a wide spectrum of approaches in supporting woman’s health during menopause, and treatment may incorporate nutrition, herbal medicine, acupuncture, homeopathy, and lifestyle counselling.  Much of the time a gentle approach tailored to the individual is all that is needed to bring the body back into balance and relieve symptoms.

Testing

Many women wonder about having hormone testing during this time. Our first goal is to take a thorough history and fully understand your symptoms. This information will give us a lot of insight as to your hormonal picture. When needed, we can use blood testing or salivary hormone testing for a clearer picture.

Bio-identical hormone therapy

If a more gentle approach is not working or desired, we are licenced to prescribe bio-identical hormones. Informed choice is important to us – a prescription for hormones would always be delivered with a detailed discussion regarding pros, cons and safety.
